Books in Homes

At school we have been very lucky to participate in the Books In Homes initiative. This is a not-for-profit charity that improves literacy skills for children and families throughout Australia. We were able to choose three books that we would like to own and read of course. How great is that!

Today we had a special assembly and the books were presented to us by Wrestling For Rotary. These famous Wrestlers are on tour from America and spoke to us about the importance of exercising our brain as well as our body. Then the wrestlers came into our classroom and spoke about their profession.

Our Grade had Jimmy Yang visit our class. How lucky were we! He signed our books and our hands and showed us his wrestling moves.

Have a look at the video below of us reading the books we received from Books In Homes.

Our Persuasive Writing

We have been busy learning about the features of persuasive writing.

Persuasive writing is when you present one point of view with evidence or reasons.

First you state your position and evidence for it.

Make sure every point starts with a new paragraph or line.

Use time connectives like Firstly, Secondly and Finally.

Restate your position at the end.

Have a look at some of our persuasive writing.

Last week we had a special assembly and the books were presented to us by the illustrator Craig Smith.  Craig has been illustrating books for over 30 years and he told us that he enjoys showing the emotion or the mood of the characters. Craig drew the character from the book   ‘Billy The Punk’. He showed us how he starts off with an outline and then slowly adds more detail to the picture,  like punk hair, pins, a ripped t-shirt and a skateboard. We were all captivated and thrilled to watch Craig turn a blank  piece of paper into an amazing picture of Billy the Punk.  Thank you Craig.

Many thanks to Mrs Turner who organised for our school to participate in this fantastic initiative.

Today we had a special assembly and the books were presented to us by Sarah Mayor Cox.

Sarah Mayor Cox is a lecturer at the School of Education at La Trobe University. Sarah spoke of her recent trip  to America and the United Kingdom where she visited a range children’s libraries. The architects of one library in Newcastle even made the building look like a book.  Sarah also spoke about holding Enid Blyton’s pins that she used when drafting her books.

Handwriting

We are serious about getting our handwriting better with correct sizing and exit points and we have been working really hard at getting this right.
Today even our pet rabbit ‘Midnight’ was exhausted from all the concentration and hard work.
Take a look at the photos below to see for yourself. Well done everybody on your hard work.
